Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
