Prime Small Screen Picks: Seven Essential Movies This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching commentary tackles the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the perceived horrors of ageing. The veteran actress presents a masterful performance playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress reduced to starring in a fitness program on television. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a mysterious and gruesome treatment called this experimental method. This creates a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to an increasingly toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery features Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who takes some time off from reporting on global conflict to embark on an opulent ship accompanied by a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other affluent guests. However when an unknown lady goes overboard one night and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Streaming currently, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Steven Soderbergh tests his directorial skills through this nifty paranormal narrative filmed completely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the lens – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor fully commits to his cult stardom via this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who agrees to a $1m payday to attend a birthday party on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the alleged criminal, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective even without a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, several kidnappings has rendered the youth frightened. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads the worst. But the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with ghostly voices offering help, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals begin monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, however Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's second offering from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks used by the actor's intelligence officer. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. Additional actors join in the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
